In India alone, there were an estimated 2.8M new cases of TB in 2015, accounting for more than 23% of the global burden. Individuals from Microsoft Research in India began developing a solution and engaged The Arcady Group to assist with supply chain challenges.
Leveraging our extensive experience in pharmaceutical supply chain and in printing and packaging, we assisted Microsoft Research in their efforts to develop and manufacture using existing equipment and processes highly cost-effective “dose instructive” blisters to address at scale the challenge of patient confusion regarding dosing of TB medications. We also worked with this grantee to identify sources of supply for pharmaceutical “envelopes” requiring unique digital printing and die-cutting capability and expertise. India is currently scaling up use of this technology, targeting 500k patients in 5 states in the next year. The patient-level dosing data provided by the back-end analytics system provide information for clinicians that enables differentiated intervention based on adherence behavior. The system is also compatible with the one being used for outcome trials in China (link to other case study).
